The paint stripes were a form of visual identification (like an assembly plant "broadcast code" or "pick code"

and would be different for each unique part number.
Anything that would create a new proliferation of part (ie, tube diameter, material thickness, tube length, slip yoke size/type or u joint size) would drive a new part number and therefore unique stripe pattern for that drive shaft part/vehicle powertrain combination.
And - yes - they were paint. Brushed immediately after the balance operation (while still in the balancing fixture). They were not taped in order to have clean edges. Pretty sloppily done, actually.
