help! correct redline tach for 69 396/325 4speed

Hi All,

I'm new to chevys and to the site. Great site. I'm trying to confirm what is the correct tach for my 69 396/325 4 speed camaro. The car has no tach(odd) but I hate not having one. So, while restoring, I'd like to do it with the right one. I'm confused betweeen a 7000max/5500 redline or 7000max/6000 redline. I also am in need of YJ trim rings, smog stuff, and a correct rear for an 03E car

Thanks
Rick

Not too odd. I have seen quite a few 69 SS396 Camaros without the U16 or the U17 gauge option.

Hi Mr T,

thanks for the feedback. What would the car setup look like if it had a console but no tach? would a clock be where the gas gage is(right side large gas gage)?

Rick,
Unless you have a CA car. You do not need smog stuff on this motor. Earl

With or without a console, you could have the large gas guage on the right and the clock in the center, or just the gas gauge with no clock. The U-16 gauge option consisted of a tach on the right and a gas guage in the center, just like the picture Charley showed you. However, the U-16 guage option was avaiable with or without a console.
The U-17 gauge option would consist of a gas gauge, water temp gauge, oil pressure guage, and the battery amp guage on the console, with the tach on the right and a clock in the center, on the dash, behind the steering wheel. Good luck! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif

Earl,

I thought all 4 speed BB cars in 69 had smog https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/confused.gif

As far as I know all the 69 Camaro's with big blocks had smog. Maybe a Canadian car with smog delete might exist ?

Didn't all 50-state cars after the 1967 model year have smog equipment?

In '69 at least only the solid lifter engines got the smog pump here in Canada. The others got away with retarded timing and leaned out primaries. Jetting and timing changes did wonders for performance. California was using the smog pump in some applications at least as far back as 1966.

'68 on ,---the factory supplied smog technology--but the Federal Clean air act didn't require manditory testing with smog equipment until the 70's at least in the NYC area........

I know on the 69 Chevelle SS396's, the automatic trans equipped 325hp cars, and very possibly the automatic trans equipped 350hp cars also, did not receive a smog pump in 49 state applications. All manual trans SS396 69 Chevelles got smog, as well as automatic trans 375hp cars. I am assuming (yeah, I know the risks involved in that https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/crazy.gif ) that the 69 Camaro SS396's would be the same https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

Smog was standard on all solid lifter motors in 1969. Hydrualic lifter motors had smog only in polution control areas. Like CA etc. Charlie`s brown 396/350 CA 69 nova had smog. The ones sold in MN did not. Earl

In 69 all big block Camaros had smog in the US. It didn't matter if it was solid lifter or not.

Re: help! correct redline tach for 69 396/325 4speed

I thought it was all 1969 Big Block Hydraulic lifter engined Camaros with MANUAL trans.were built with A.I.R.
And ALL the Solid lifter 1969 Camaros with Auto & Man. Trans, got A.I.R. also.
Meaning the MANUAL trans. was the deciding factor for the Non solid lifter engines, because the drivers feathered the clutch,& had a Higher possibilty of Pollutants.

Well here's a '69 Chevelle--396/350--never heard about auto or 4sp.being immune from the Federal Clean Air Act https://www.yenko.net/attachments/131000-69chev.jpg----

I also beleive it was manual trans 350 hp cars that got smog for 69.

Re: help! correct redline tach for 69 396/325 4speed

That looks like a Manual Trans Chevelle engine picture to me & that should & does have A.I.R.(No TH Vacuum line next to the Distributor)
I have similar 69 Chevelle factory Hydraulic engine pix & they too Have A.I.R. w/Man. trans.,yet the same engined Chevelle w/Auto. Trans. does NOT have A.I.R.
For 1969,I thought the BB Camaros were the same Scenario as the BB Chevelles.

For 1970,ALL the Solid Lifter Engines received A.I.R.
But starting this year, the BB Hydraulic engines did NOT receive A.I.R. anymore, regardless of Trans. type.
Starting in 1970,all Engines & trans type received the new TCS-Transmission Control Spark System.

OK...One more time.. All US big block 69 Camaros had smog. I am no expert on Canadian cars but the US ones got smog. Even the low hp auto trans 396 cars. Ever see those goofy two piece smog tubes for the pass side of a 396 325 hp auto ac car ? Chevelles with auto in 69 with the closed element air cleaner , slanted down snorkel had no smog...

Charlie's right. All 396 Camaros got smog in 69. My L35 auto came with it's original pump and tubes.....

SB manuals got smog, but not SB autos.

Joe,

That also doesn't look like a Qjet carb under the air cleaner base and it definitely isn't a Qjet fuel line going to the carb https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/headbang.gif Don't believe everything you read in photo captions!

Re:A.I.R. Requirements

After doing some more inquiring & research,I see I was wrong & Charleys is right.
I found this paragraph in the October 1967 Motorcade while they were road testing a 1968 Caprice.

"For several months, many of us have been wondering what the different Auto makers would do to meet the new Federal Legislation on air pollution. Now that the 68's are out, this is Chevrolet's answer to the problem.
The A.I.R. Air Injection Reactor(AIR),which is an engine driven pump that admits air into the exhaust headers,is used on all engines with OPEN-ELEMENT air cleaners regardless of transmission, and on all Corvair & Corvete engines, and on all Chevy II four cylinder engines, and on all other engines with Manual transmissions.
The controlled Combustion System (CCS),which draws heated air from the exhaust to pre-heat intake air,is used with automatic transmission power teams on all other models."

I can further add that starting in 1970,due to the addition of TCS-Transmission Controlled Spark,Hydraulic lifter engines no longer required A.I.R,but all the solid lifter engines did, regardless of Transmission, even in Canada.
