iron intake L79
Hi All,
Need some help with a discussion on another forum. Can anybody here confirm that a 68 Corvette with RPO L79 would have had a cast iron intake and Qjet ?, or is there a website I could get positive info from ?. Thanks, Stitch |
Re: iron intake L79
69 had cast iron and quad 68 was still alum. This is for vetts.

Re: iron intake L79
I believe 68 was still aluminum from the Winters Foundry.

Re: iron intake L79
From the "Vette Vues Fact Book, 1968-1972" by M. F. Dobbins:
[ QUOTE ] Unlike 1965-1967, the 327/350HP engine (L-79) used a cast iron intake. [/ QUOTE ] Dr. Dobbins is generally regarded as THE authority on early Corvettes, so if he says it's so, it probably is!! Also, CBTN shows the Casting Number as 3919803 and used in the 68 Passenger with the 327/250HP and 275HP, Chevelle with the 327/250HP, 275HP and 325HP, Chevy II with the 327/275HP and 325HP, Chevy II with the 350/295HP, Camaro with the 327/275HP, Camaro with the 350/295HP and the Corvette with the 327/300HP and 350HP. It shows this manifold as Cast Iron. Ed |

A friend of the guy I bought my COPO from, has a 1968 L79 Corvette. It looks totally stock and has a cast iron intake.

Re: iron intake L79
In 1968 Hot Rod road tested an L79 '68 Nova, cast iron intake and Q-jet.

Re: iron intake L79
The only '68 L79 325 hp Chevelle that I ever saw had the cast iron intake and quadrajet carb. Looked like a 327 275 hp engine but was quicker than a friend's '69 L34 Chevelle. They were the sleeper of '68.

Re: iron intake L79
That's correct. Chrome valve covers, also for 1968. The 1969 350/350 was the same set-up. Cast iron, Q-jet, but with aluminum valve covers.

When I lived in Burlington,Ia a buddy of mine had a 68 325hp 327 Chevelle Fathom blue bench seat car enclosed is a picture of the air cleaner. This is the only thing left of the car.

Re: iron intake L79
My 68 L79 Nova came with a cast iron intake and Quadrajet carb. The carb was changed somewhere along the line to a Holley. Kim, let me know if you want to part with that air cleaner assembly as that was missing (among other things) when I got the car.

Re: iron intake L79
One more difference between the '68 Corvette 327/300 and the L79 327/350 is that the L79 has a chrome oil fill cap the the base engine cap is painted. The two stamp pad codes are HT and HP. I have an HP, which is 4-speed, A/C, P/S and manual brakes. HT is non-A/C, 4-speed.
