Chevelle ss wheel lug nuts

Who makes correct lug nuts for the SS wheels theese I have the taper is so small they look like they will enlarge the holes even on a good rim

I just recently ruined one wheel and slightly opened up lug holes on another due to the same cheap-a$$ repro lug nuts , so I will be interested in replies to this too, John. That tapered section is definitely smaller in diameter than the original GM lug nuts.

I would like to see what a original lug nut taper looks like. Here is what happens when you use the cheap ones. Even on a perfect rim the taper is to small fot the taper in the rim. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...7-dsc00267.jpg

John -- did they "bottomed out" against the drum/rotor without tightening the wheel? TAZ

Re: Chevelle ss wheel lug nuts

It is not my car some body else put the wheels on and when it fell off they called a tow truck. The tow truck driver put the spare on to get it on the truck he did say the lugs were tight when he took them off. The guys who car it is had some extra repop lugs in the trunk and as I was putting them on a perfect rim I ca feel it pulling thru the lug holes. I bought replacement lugs at Oriely and put them on but they do not have the stainless steel cap. side buy side the repop lug and a original rally wheel lug nut I would think the SS wheel and a rally wheel would have the same taper

Yep, that's pretty much what my wheel looks like too. I had the repro lug nuts on for over a year with no issues.....then I had a posi differential installed and took the car out to make sure the new posi was working as it should Soon afterwards is when the rear wheels loosened up and almost fell off.

I did a search on this site for "lug nuts" and found several different threads over the past year or two with some options for more functional lug nuts, but I have not been able to find anything but these worthless repros that has a stainless cap like the originals. And finding NOS or good usable originals is next to impossible.

Tech Tip Done by Me and Rick Nelson in my Chevelle Club >>> Over sized Lug Nut hole on your SS Rims?
This is a good way to save your original SS rims if they have over sized holes from being stripped over the years. Don't get rid of them just get a set of "Lug Seats" http://www.oldschoolplating.com/lug-seats-2/

That link is generic Danny.
Steve died last year & OldSchoolplating.com is defunct & no more.
No Lug seats available or left in stock, from what his family told another.

Bill, the inserts are the way to go but last time I tried the phone # for Old School it was disconnected, supposedly the owner died. so you'll have to make them yourself.

Re: Chevelle ss wheel lug nuts

Back to discussing a solution to the problem at hand....

While I don't doubt that the "Lug Seats" pictured would physically hold the wheel in place on the car, there's no way they could exert a proper amount of clamping force that would normally exist with a wheel and lug nuts in good OEM condition. The material of the "Lug Seats" is WAY too thin for that. Those might be fine if all you were going to do is putt around the neighborhood like an old granny, but to do any type of performance driving on a wheel like John has pictured here.....I'll pass thank you. Apparently a moot point since they are no longer available.

There are chrome one piece lug nuts available with a much larger tapered seat area, but they would just go thru those greatly enlarged lug holes and clamp against the brake drum without really holding the wheel in place. This type of lug nut will work fine on a wheel whose lug holes are only slightly enlarged from nominal size (which is 5/8" diameter). Unless and until some manufacturer decides to make a more functionally useful repro stainless-capped lug nut like the originals, I will be using these chrome one piece lug nuts.

Heard critics say Steves' lugseats prevent the lugnut from biting into the lug hole, and thus it slowly loosens over time, especially if you're a spirited driver.
Bill, don't go chrome,(i.e. Gorilla Nuts),go stainless steel capped like the original one was.
I found this very close convexed top, stainless capped 7/16-20 lug,yet slightly taller with a wider seat, while tooling around @ McMaster-Carr a few years ago.
It works extremely well on SS wheels with oversized holes, and really isn't noticeable unless you're parked next to a car with the more proper smaller lugnut on his Magnum 500 wheel.
Here are some photos to compare it to.
Very last photo is it alone on top row, followed by three later replacement #414188's on far left second row, follwed by eight EXTREMELY RARE & SOUGHT AFTER lugs that the assembly line used 46/47 years ago.
If anyones interested in this new taller/wider seat lugnut, let me know & I'll guide you to it today.
McMaster-Carr stopped carrying it,but I found a second retailer who does for almost a buck a piece,and it's not GM,who charges $6 ea.

I assume you are talking about the "bulge" acorn nuts with the large taper area? That's what I've used on Buick and SS wheels in the past.

Seeing the design of the reproduction nuts, I guess it's no wonder why so many AO / YA wheels are trashed (assuming that the factory nuts were the same). Not much width to that seat.

EDIT: The style Mr70 posted above are the "bulge" acorn nuts I was referring to above. I didn't know they made stainless capped nuts. Good stuff!

That number is a GM number. I got several sets for my SS wheels from GM Parts direct. If you go to GM parts Direct and put that number in a search, it will pop up.These lugs are great for preserving wheel lug bores.

Re: Chevelle ss wheel lug nuts

Ditto what Bill said. Your safety isn't worth the correctness of appearance. The repop lug nuts are only good for perfect rims with low-perf applications. The originals are just a bit better. My brother totaled his Chevelle in 1971 when the lug nuts failed on his Super Sport Chevelle.

Put the good lug nuts one and forget the critics. Just like upgrading your car to disc brakes or a dual master cylinder. Safety trumps originality here.

Just my $.02 worth.

Will those work (part # 12387947) on 1971 SS 5 spoke rims also.

Re: Chevelle ss wheel lug nuts

Yes, same problems with those wheels too. On my son's 72 Malabu we just went with a chrome log nuts to solve the problem. Also look at the washers I made, see below.
