Re: 1964 Impala SS Convert 409 425HP help
There was an aftermarket company named Carson that made removable hardtops for '62-64 convertibles. They were never a Chevrolet accessory but a dealer could put anything the customer wanted on a new car to make a sale.
As far as value, I could only offer a very wide range depending on the quality and correctness of the restoration and if there's a legitimate original driveline. I'd prefer not to guess without seeing the car/documents. As for production numbers, of the 8,684 409s installed in '64 full size Chevys, the 425hp version was installed in 1,986 of them for US sales and another 11 for export. There are no numbers available with a breakdown by model, body style or bundled with any other options. Verne |
Re: 1964 Impala SS Convert 409 425HP help
Hey Verne, this sounds like the car that was in the old Late Great Chevy Club Magazine back in the 1985-87 time frame. I actually had TWO complete sets in their binders but lost them in my recent house fire. I do remember that it was a Red '64 Impala Convertible with the 409/425 HP engine and a strange white-colored removeable hardtop. Maybe you can check your set in the time frame I mentioned.

He also sent a 5 page letter giving the history of car. Anyone who looks through these docs will have no doubt the car is the real deal. There is even a letter from chevrolet sales manager thanking him for purchasing a new chevrolet. i have the sales brochure for the removable hard top. On the cover it says Riviera removable hard top. Made in Iowa. I can scan the cover of it. I don't know how to post pics maybe a fellow member can help me out. My main reason for asking for help on production numbers is i haven't seen a numbers matching on of these sell so I was thinking the production must have been low. If anybody has the article from late great chevy go ahead and post it it's an interesting read.

Re: 1964 Impala SS Convert 409 425HP help
Pics sent to xplantdad. The late great chevy magazine this car was in was in 1985. I was going through the documents original owner sent. Man is it cool to see all that old paper work. we even have the paperwork when he was going to trade impala in on a new 65 Vette. he even sent a dealer promo car with the original box. I hope someone can find and post the Late Great Chevy article it's an interesting story. i would send it to somebody to post but the owner has it and he is out of town.

The story on the top is the original owner bought it new for his 62 Impala SS and he kept it for the 64 when he bought that. The blue book is his actual payment book showing the payments he made on the top. The loan docs for the top are there also.

Good point!! I guess we are safer now with seat belts, airbags, GPS, traction control, ABS, AWD, unleaded gas, rearview cameras, radial tires, Onstar, smart phones, etc...
Makes you wonder how we ever got along before wilma |

I think this car is in uncharted territory. I cant find another one that has sold to compare it to.

Re: 1964 Impala SS Convert 409 425HP help
True I cannot say whether any of the cars sold in that guide are well documented versions. I would think some were and some were not but to say all were not documented does not seem accurate. But the one for 42 plus had to be at least a high quality restoration one would think.

Re: 1964 Impala SS Convert 409 425HP help
Bruce - do you have docs verifying 409/425? Hard to tell from your overall photo, but some of that does look like dealership docs.

Plus he is in contact with original owner who has verified what it was when new and where he bought it. We have the ledger sheet from the dealer showing sale price of car $4120.00 minus what they gave him for trade in. I know Doc's are everything with A car like this but how often can you trace entire history and have the original owner verify it all for you in writing plus hava a article published from 25 years ago basically saying what we already new.
Interesting story in the Late great chevy article from 1985 original owner states that he traded car in on a 65 Vette (have that doc also) they called him a few months later and said they couldn't sell car because of the "big motor" and that they were going to put a 327 in it would he be interested in buying original motor. He bought it we have the check he wrote and the reciept from the dealer. Original owner hung on to motor and in 1974 second owner was selling car and original owner bought it back and reunited motor to car. original owner and his step son owned car until around 2005 when it came to my area. |

Re: 1964 Impala SS Convert 409 425HP help
How is it, understanding my being a picker of nits, that this 1964 Super Sport has a first payment date 0f 11/18/1962?
Wouldn't that be a year too soon? |
Re: 1964 Impala SS Convert 409 425HP help
It appears the hardtop was purchased in 1962 judging by the postage date on the envelope the hardtop information was sent in - evidently for another car - and the payment book must be for the hardtop as well based on the total amount paid ($342).
