New Member Thinking Of Building COPO Clone????

Hi there I purchased this car recently and I am thinking of making it a COPO Clone.

http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...00930-1723.jpg

I am sure I came to right place to ask this question. Other than the obvious, as clones seem to be frowned upon, how do guys on this site feel about building this car up from the six banger it is, and dropping a big block in it. I guess it wouldn't really be a clone other that it is a base car with a big block drive train. I will not try to pass it off as a copo. I just wnat to enjoy it. My friend sent me a picture of a ZL1 that looks very close to mine and I thought, that would be a great conversion. Any advice would be appreciated. This is my first post here.

Thanks in adavnce. I normally hang over at Team Camaro.

Looks like a clean car to start with. That's what I would do with it if it were mine.

Good luck,

Scott

Re: New Member Thinking Of Building COPO Clone????

A few years ago I came across a 1961 Ford F-100 unibody shortbed. I'm by no means a Ford man, I just like the lines of that particular truck. Keep in mind that this was a ridden hard, six cylinder pickup. I joined a Ford truck site to learn more and decided that the unibody would look great dropped and even better as a convertible! So that's what I did. And (to me) it looked great!! I posted a couple pictures and you would have thought that I had cut up a Boss 429 or something!! These guys ripped me a new one for "destroying" such a "rare" truck. Did the research first, there is nothing rare about a unibody. They basically kicked me off the site. My point is, it's YOUR car, It's not a "one of", so do what YOU want with it. Have fun!!!

Looks like a good base for a COPO Clane to me.

Leave the 250 designation on it for fun.

great looking car ...

you could even add the decals to the seat head rests if you like the look of sYc on your seats!

it IS your car, do what you want with it although it looks like you could enjoy the car the way it is for a while too

most of the cars are being turned into LS x drivetrains now instead of the old school stuff, they say 20-30 mpg and 12 second 1/4's is why they do it ...

Not trying to be critical, cynical, etc. but why worry about "Cloning"? Why not just do an engine/trans/rear swap, build it like you want it and let the car be what it is; a damned cool '69 Camaro.

That's what I was also thinking, Dennis! I'd put in a GM 502 or 572 Crate motor, a Tremec 5-Speed and a nice brand new Strange or Moser 12-Bolt. It would be an awesome car to drive and you could even "disguise" one of those newer GM Crate Motors to VERY closely resemble an original 427 but run much harder. Same with the Tremec as you can bolt on a stock-style Hurst shifter handle.

I dig the way that thing sits and looks. Is it as nice as it looks in the pic? Why not just drop in a zippy sbc/TH350 and regear the 10-bolt and have fun driving it for a while? You could be cruising correctly quickly. And after you get bored with it in a year or two, first do a 12-bolt, then the bbc/springs, etc., then brakes, etc. Take the incremental approach rather than all at one time. You get to enjoy your ride while eventually getting it the way you ultimately want it.

Just a thought.

JB

Thanks Tim good idea. Then the car will be 100% with the matching drive train in the garage and a big block under the hood. I won't change a thing other than what I need to, to go big block.

Hey JB. I just put the car in the shop this week to take care of a few rust issues. Changing a quarter and repairing a lower fender and the rear window channel. Nothing too major but significant. I am not going to do what I did with my 68 and have it off the road restoring it for 7 years not to finish it. This car will be driven as a daily driver as often as possible. I need to be able to drive my car or I will go nuts!

I started a build thread at Team Camaro if anyone is a member there and wants to take a look. I take it is ok to post here even if I don't have a Yenko or Supercar with a build thread. I am new to this site and this is my first thread. Looking forward to learning lots from you guys. Thanks

I like the pump gas 502 built to look like a 427 idea. Then you can leave the 250 emblems on. Because, when people ask about it, you can tell them that its 250 inches PER SIDE

Hey Tom that is a great Idea. I think I will take you up on that!
