Thanks Charlie for clearing that up. The original owner of this car bought a 1962 impala ss convertible new and bought the top for that car. He kept the top when he got rid of the 62. The car was delivered and put into service in Nov 1963 and he used the top on the 64. ALL the documents will be on display at the mecum Indy auction along with car and top.

Well the car sold last night for 95 k thought it would hit 100k but owner netted out the same thanks to some quick negotiating. Were any of you there. Met Charlie and his friend mike from Chicago while they were looking at it. Answer a question for me. There was a 62 convert same color combo 409 409hp 4speed non original motor frame off restored the cars were in about the same condition. The 62 lot s87 bid up to 95 and no sale reserve was 115 it went across a little before noon sat our car lot s285 went at a little after 8 was supposed to go at 6:45. Was it that the car went to late or is a 62 that much more desirable? I figured ours being numbers match 425 hp with the original owner there and paper work would have beat the 95 the 62 went to. The guy that was high bidder on the 62 was on ours but I think he was out in the mid 80's. Reggie Jackson was right next to car when I drove it on the block with original owner in car with me he came up on the block as the car did t bought he would bid not sure if he did. On another note have any of you guys heard of a guy named Tom Dietz he showed up Friday with his briefcase full of reference material and was all over car.. He was obviously verifying it for somebody. I think it was Reggie cuz Reggie walking around with Tom a lot. Clue me in on who this Tom guy is

These are just my thoughts but '62 was THE year for the 409. I beleive a correctly restored non-matching number '62 would easly out sell a matching number '64. I would think the 8 PM sell time would be much better than the noon sell time.

I have a customer/friend (not Reggie Jackson, lol) who is getting into the hobby and has a thing for full size, optioned out, bucket seat 4sp highest HP '64 convertibles. I told him about this car and he became very interested. I couldn't attend so I tried to find him someone knowledgable onsite at the auction to help him set his goals and limits. I reached out to Stefano at Nickey and he recommended Mr. Dietz for his knowledge of full size Chevs, esp W motor cars. I don't know Mr. Dietz, but my customer was very happy with his knowledge, professional manner and help, and thanked me for the referral. He dropped out before the final bidding on the car, as it went past his comfort zone. FWIW, I was thinking $75-90K if the right guys were in the room, and it looks like they were.

There was definitely some money there, as my favorite '66 L79 Nova appears to have brought $105K! Nice to see the Mauve '66 Hemi Charger with 6K miles bring $190K.

I agree with Tommy that '62's will outpull '64's, since they're the iconic year. '64 fullsize muscle fades a bit in the market because it starts to get eclipsed by the midsize musclecars that emerged that year, IMO. They did in '64 as well.

In Arizona, 8pm starts to lose the crowd to dinner and socializing-not sure if Indy has the same temptations. 8pm seems better, and at the very worst is a push with noon.

On a related note, if anyone out there has a '64 Galaxie 500XL R-code convertible, a 426 4sp Sport Fury convertible, (and so on) for sale, please PM or email me. Interested party still has an itch to scratch....

----Tom Dietz is in my opinion probably the most knowledgeable 62/3/4 Chevy guy on the planet. From what I have ever seen when he says it is so, its so!!!! That Stefano recommended him says it all......Bill S

I assumed Reggie hired him since I saw them hanging out and Reggie came up on the block when car got up there. Your right Tom seemed to be very knowledgable about the car. The few things he pointed out all had to do with some of the reproduction things we used on the car most of which I still have the originals

Stefano sorry I missed you when you looked at car. Not sure when you looked at it but you may have had a chance to talk to the original owner who ordered the car. He was there Fri afternoon and most of the day Sat..
