Re: 1970 L-78 Camaro
Wow, nice find. My 1969 L78 Camaro also originally came from John Smith Chevrolet and it is also triple green. It is fathom green, midnight green vinyl top and medium green interior. According to the original owner, it also sat on the lot for a while and he got a good deal on it. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/smirk.gif

Re: 1970 L-78 Camaro
NRJ, could you please post the numbers you found on the front of the block, behind the alt. Thanks! Great find! Mike

Re: 1970 L-78 Camaro
I haven't been able to get a picture to turn out but the PAD stamping is: T0407CKO.
I'll post a picture when I can get it to turn out along with the VIN stamped by the oil filter on the block. I should have the engine pulled in the next week or so. |

Finally got a picture of the engine pad to turnout.

.....looking good!!!!!

Re: 1970 L-78 Camaro
Another Norwood L78 with the VIN on the back of the block by the oil filter. I see a pattern developing
hear with these cars. It seems as though all of the Norwood L78 Camaro VIN numbers are stamped on the back of the block. It is the LA cars that are not consistent. There are so FEW (10 or 15 of 600) of these with the Original (Born With) Engine that it is hard to tell what is Correct and what is Not. It’s good to see more of them being found. They are out there somewhere..... |
Re: 1970 L-78 Camaro
NRJ, Thanks alot for taking the time. Helps me out a bunch. Mike.

Re: 1970 L-78 Camaro
My Norwood '70 L-78 is also stamped by the oil filter. That seems to be the norm for Norwood cars in '70 not just L-78's.

Re: 1970 L-78 Camaro
Two more questions for Nils...what are the dates on the heads? I understand you have two air cleaners, one original, one is NOS. Could you compare the two, and tell us if there are any differences, no matter how small. Thanks Mike

My '70 CKO L78 Camaro #854 4-bolt block has been decked in the past, and the vin is gone. It has always looked like there was not one by the oil filter. I got the engine from the original owner that bought the Camaro new in '70. What else could an #854 4-bolt '70 dated 402 bore block have been, other than an L78? |
Re: 1970 L-78 Camaro
Rick, L78 is it. The 854 block was used in 350 Hp versions with 2 bolt mains. L78 was the only application that Colvin's chevy by the numbes shows for a four bolt block. Mike

Re: 1970 L-78 Camaro
While on the subject of 1970 Camaro L-78's, myself, Nils and Mark L are trying to acculate owners and info to form a L-78 registry. This will be similar to Ricks Chevelle LS-6 registry. PLEASE pass along this plea for ANY/ALL names info to whomever you might know with 70 Camaro L-78.
FYI there is already a 70-73 Z-28 registry......... My Email is [email protected] |
Re: 1970 L-78 Camaro
THNDER,
I've been out of town for several days. The casting dates on both heads is C 6 70 (March 6th 1970) http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d8...n/IMG_0072.jpg As far as the NOS Air cleaner, It is still in the unopened box and I really don't want to open it right now. I have had several generous offers for it and I'll probably sell it to help pay for part of the restoration. I'll ask whoever I sell it to if I can open it. |
Re: 1970 L-78 Camaro
Getting that NOS air cleaner WITH your purchase is just mind boggling......Easily one of the rarest/most valuble individual parts on any 2nd Gen Camaro. Did you also get NOS Fan Shroud or at least GOOD one.....
|
Re: 1970 L-78 Camaro
They sold more Dual Snorkles over the counter, then came on the actual cars themselves.
Here's One in the Box. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=4594216044 |
Re: 1970 L-78 Camaro
Chuck,
I got a good Fan shoud with the car that I believe is the correct one,it is just dirty. The part number on it is 3973920. Is this the correct shroud? http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d8...n/IMG_1168.jpg http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d8...n/IMG_1166.jpg http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d8...n/IMG_1169.jpg Also, what is the part number for the L-78 radiator? I have to clean mine up and look for the part number. |
Re: 1970 L-78 Camaro
Is the engine lift hook original? Don Lightfoot is looking for info on the correct finish on them. It looks like it has never been painted. Correct?
|
Re: 1970 L-78 Camaro
Nils look for the metal tag with a (LM) Code.
This Radiator was used in the 1970 L34 and L78 Camaro’s. Be VERY, VERY Careful with that Fan Shroud. It is another Extremely Rare and Tough piece to find. I had a guy put his elbow through one of mine. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/frown.gif Good Question on the Lift Brackets which were also used on the LS6. Hopefully some of the LS6 Chevelle guys will chime in with some answers for us. Niles Lift Brackets look to be Not Painted. |
Re: 1970 L-78 Camaro
That's the correct fan shroud for ALL BB engined Camaros used in the Camaro from 1970-72.
Not L-78 specific. |
Re: 1970 L-78 Camaro
CamarosRus, you mentioned a 70-73 Z-28 registry ? Can you give me any info in regards to that, would like to make sure my 70 is in.. Thanks..
