I've noted before that the engine paint is not full gloss. It needs some flattener.

I've heard this too, but never knew if it was true. If there are differences, I would *guess* that's it's more a plant-of-manufacture thing - Flint may have had a different paint supplier than Tonawanda where the BBC was built.

I only recall a different shade of Orange being used,say 1965ish,compared to the 1970's.
We talked about this on here,but I can't find it right now.
