Hey Pontiac62 that wasn't shrubbery, it was 30 year old weed growing out of the ashtray in that 68 SS396 on the hill. Be careful smokeing that stuff, it was sprayed with paraquat. Causes hallucinations and memory loss. My name ain't Eric either. Tell SS427 to stay away from that stuff too.

I got lucky and found that exact SS sterring wheel at a local swap meet last year. Paid $5 for it. It too was cracked, but not beyond repair. What I did to repair it was take some of the marine epoxy (the stuff in the tube that you pinch off a piece and knead it to activate), and filled the cracks. I then sanded it and carefully rescribed the ribbing on the front edge. Then, painted the wheel my medium blue. Came out really good, and cost a whopping $9.00 to purchase and fix. These wheels are out there, and no one really knows what they are. I was picking them up off eBay for a while last year and redoing them like I did mine. I sold a couple to people locally to use. I might be able to find a couple more....hopefully people that have them aren't reading this board (be very quiet all you Iowa folks)! Basically the same as the Pontiac wheel isn't it? I don't know the answer because I have never seen the Pontiac wheels up close.

The last nice uncracked one I saw on Ebay sold for $632. Restored ones sell for $300 plus on Ebay. They are a little different than the Pontiac steering wheels.

question Racefan, I recall a how to in one of mag's on wheel repair, is this the stuff they recommend?? how long has your wheel been repaired and a silly question but have you looked real close does it show any shrinkage at the repair??
Lasty what kind of paint did you use on the wheel to hold up to some wear, if you could post the brand of stuff you used to check out.

To be honest, I didn't see the article you mentioned. I decided it would be a good fix because I used it on my boat repair and it held up to the sun very well without changing shape or cracking. I am in Phoenix on business right now, so don't know the brand of paint off hand. I do know that it was the same stuff I used on my console, think it was the flexible vinyl paint with the correct medium blue color. I think I got it from either Year One or Classic Ind. The car is still being redone, so it doesn't see the light of day yet, so maybe I was speaking out of turn. It does look pretty good, but I am not planning to try and get 1,000 points either. Just seemed to me a better way to try and fix mine so I could use the real money on more critical resto projects. The couple others I sold seem to be doing alright, but again those cars are garaged most of the time. The hardest part from my perspective was the trying to get the ribs on it right, I actually used a feeler gauge to measure the ribs and made the few that were effected by the repair with that. It was the best way I could think of to get the right spacing. The one I redid had the Impala crest (or whatever it is called), did we ever come to a conclusion on what a June Camaro would have had....SS or SS396?

You know what, I was re-reading my post of last night and thought it sounded different than I meant. When I said I hoped people in Iowa who had them weren't reading the post. To me that sounded like I was trying to do something dishonest.....what I meant was that I hoped they weren't reading so the price on them won't go up. If anyone wants me to, I will try and find them. I know where there are a couple more that will need fixed. If the guy still has them, I can pick them up for you and send them as is. I am not sure the longevity of the fix I did and am a medical person by trade....so I won't try and fix them for you. Leave me a PM if interested. Price will be whatever it costs me to get them, I just want to help you guys 'cause there are going to be some parts I need and want to get some networking going (you know..."I'll scratch your back" kind of thing).

Hey Phil when you get home send me a pm with the name of the stuff please I have one cracked wheel and one with a hairline, I want to practice on one and see if it works, did you try and fill any 1/16 " cracks or how big were they.

There have been quite a few wheel resto articles in various magazines and most of them use some type of epoxy....I recall you needed to open up hairline cracks and V them out so the epoxy has something to hang on to....sand & paint and it looks excellent....
