You won't be dissapointed in one of David Ray's HEI distributors or msd triggers. I have one and have been using it for almost 2 years. If you're out on the road any parts store will have replacement parts. You won't be making any over night stays waiting on a special order petronix replacement.
Dave starts with your points core and basically blueprints it, rechromes the shaft and builds it back all cleaned up and put back together as an HEI. He'll build the curve to your spec's or you can provide the specifics of your mill and he'll provide a recomedation for you. Dave requires you to use an Accel 8140 coil that you can paint black and will look stock. I am using petronix 8mm black wires with straight ends at the cap (I had to hunt to find the ends and boots) and I think it looks real good. I'll see if I can get a pic posted... You can tell Dave that Dennis from Team Camaro says hi.. |

Dennis:
Pictures would be great! I have heard nothing but positive about Dave's work also...you are also correct on the coil recommendation, as he mentioned he disliked any of the epoxy coils. I emailed and asked him for a wire recommendation, but haven't heard back from him...would you happen to know what he recommends? Copper? Spiral? Or???? |

Off the top of my head I don't recall Dave's wire recomendations. Here's a few shots I don't have flash and hand held the light so they are not the greatest...
![]() ![]() ![]() Couldn't find a straight boot kit for the 8mm wires but was able to make due with a 7mm kit. Here's the rest of the White Wonder, not exactly a "Super Car" but she's my super car... ![]() |

You may have already installed it by now. But M&H Wire fabricators has an electronic conversion that uses a single wire and you can use a stock coil or an upgraded one. It mounts completely under the OEM distibutor cap and it uses the existing distributor lead for a completely original appearance. I have used it on 4 cars and it works and performs flawlessly. Here's their web address www.breakerless.com

Moparts and I ended up building a small body HEI. I bought an MSD pickup through Summit, but Mo showed me an OEM Chrysler HEI pickup on his shelf that looked exactly the same as the MSD unit, except for the ends on the wires...but was a BUNCH cheaper. And I *believe* it was a Chrysler reluctor wheel we used as well. Mill down the shaft, epoxy & roll pin the reluctor on, then plug it into an MSD. Another solution is to simply use your points to fire an MSD box, making the points your "trigger" while the MSD box still provides the fire...your points would basically be just along for the ride, but the MSD is still providing the spark to your coil.
There's a few ways to do it, but I'm gun-shy of any under cap conversions now. |
