It talks about "No gates to pass or press across" which I'm thinking they are comparing it to the V-Gate.

i have a hurst catalog from 74 and it shows the round stick.
plus it seems that one out of every twenty or so on ebay has
the flat stick so leeds me to believe less available means earlier.

Check out the April 1971 Hot Rod for the scoop on the Mr. Gasket race shifter. There was a mad rush between the two companies to be the first to market a straight line shifter.

I'm just guessing here, but I would think the round stick was probably more cost effective, since it was welded onto the plate.

Look at the linkage rods on this thing!! The builder was a machinist...can you tell?

Yeah, it was a killer old race car and really well built. A yenko.net member owns it now and did a great job freshening it up. Maybe we can convince him to start a new thread....
