Also very fond of the '77-'early 80's era especially the Car Craft Nat's.. Here are some pics of SOME of my SMN's collection but not all. I collect the '72 and '77-'84 era... I have way more stuff than pictured. Have some of the really rare stuff no one sees anymore like the sponges they would gave out to wash the cars with the nat's log imprinted on them. Have all the decals and license plate frames etc. Lot's of unused tickets etc.

I became personal friends with Lee Laskey who worked with Special Events, the promoter of the show. Purchased from Lee many of the insider stuff the general public never received like the "official" badges, the street machine survey booklet that was handed out to venders that sort of thing.

LOL, a few of my frisbees have dog teeth marks in them...

I really think the golden age of the CC Nat's was 77-81 when it was at Indianapolis. Cars were still basic street driven cars..cars we could all relate to back then and today. Most still had true Day 2 parts on them and were modified much like the early to mid 70's. Starting in the early 80's era the cars just got silly with one upmanship...c/mon fuel funny car style cages in street cars.. Cars just became hokey...caricatures if you will.

The earlier Nat's still had wheel barrow races and spark plug changing contest..more laid back and fun. People just lounged around. Later ones turned into more of a full on competition with the participants, professionalism might be a better term? and I think some of the earlier charm of the events went away.

For instance I remember when a super hot car came rolling in people would literally run, yes run as in sprinting in large groups to see the car park etc. Today it's just hohum one of many. Even I don't get that real excitement anymore at events. The early Nat's was one of the first real places where folks from rural, less urban areas saw some really nice cars...stuff we only saw in magazines. Maybe that is why these early shows are so special to so many people.

Never been to the CA Nat's. Was at Indy in '80 as a spectator.
I do have a bunch of 81 Pomona stuff, posters, shirts etc.
