I'll take a swing and say it says L78. Judging by the alternator bracket it's probably for a '65 Corvette.

Looks to me like the heads (appear to be cast iron?) and exhaust manifolds are painted - did the aluminum heads on an L88 get painted?
Road draft tube on drivers side valve cover? Spark plug wires and shielding are for a car with a radio. Non L88 air cleaner |

There's some contradiction in what it might be. In 1966 they changed the upper alternator bracket (at least in production on big blocks for sure) which gave the alternator better support. This is 1965 style, but there isn't an inline gas filter which I believe BB '65 Vettes had. Exhaust manifolds look correct for '65 L78 or '66 L72. Vette wire/distributor shielding, '65 Vette looking thermostat housing. I guess it's possible it's an early 1966 mock-up from on-hand parts. It's kind-of a mix '65-'66. I wish I could read the part numbers better. I still lean '65 L78.

Another shot of the first engine. Looks like L78 on the exhaust manifold but also looks to say PPD L88 (maybe pre-production L88?).
