Boys I never have bought that picture of a 68 pulling the wheels on the street back then and still don't today. I just don't buy it.

You know.. if that were just a run of the mill '68 Camaro I would have to agree..... but that is the Baldwin/Motion full competition Record Setting Drag Car there...in it's prime no less... Not only is that car yanking the tires up on the street.. I'll bet it did it quite easily.. And to me that "smoke" looks more like dust off the ground being stirred up from the open headers at wide open throttle.. but thats just my opinion....

The "smoke" is located in front of the tire. and only on the passenger side. So unless the car is in reverse doing a peg leg burn out...it's dust from the ground or from the right header.

I always loved that shot too...the '68 Goat this side of the '64 Poncho is braking to turn around and join the fun?.

Anyway, is it even the same car for sure?. Although both are lettered and have the dash-tach, the street shot shows a stock hood also look at the leading edge of the roof...is that just shadows or a vinyl top?.

I did ask Joel about it at the reunion several years ago. I asked if they used bottle jacks . Didn't get an answer.

I agree Pete. I'm not sure if that is the same car. Hey I love that picture I still have the mag. it was in. I think it's one of the best shots taken back then. I just feel the car didn't do that from a standing start.

I had M/T cheater slicks on my '68 Ram Air Firebird for a short time. The car had pretty well everything done to it and still be "stock". I couldn't make those slicks hook up no matter what I did and the car certainly wasn't making A/MP horsepower. Getting on and off the gas in low could get the wheels up a bit, (so a friend told me). I tend to agree with Kim. There were a lot of smoke and mirrors magazine articles back then. Remember the GTO Ferrari comparison where the GTO blew the Ferrari away. I'll have to get into the attic and drag out all the old magazines that I have stashed away. You tend to forget all the good old stuff in them. I've always taken magazine articles as entertainment and nothing more. Works for me.

If the tires are lit, he's got no bite.

I think it's smoke from the right header,....................maybe dust, but I'm thinkin smoke.

or tranny fluid.

Thats because it's a rediculous question

I'll bet it wasn't the first or last time a Motion built car lifted the tires on that stretch of highway in front of the Motion building either...

Oh wait ..thats right.. it's Impossible for a car to pull the wheels on the "Street" without bottle jacks under it... Come on.. http://youtube.com/watch?v=oyrXtkFIagY

Smoke's in front of the tires so it's probably a huge open-header exhaust belch emitted when the gas pedal was mashed to the floor.
