The federal government could collect much more revenue from a national sales tax... but then they would have no way of knowing where people really were inside the borders... it is all about the government knowing where you are and what you are doing, how much money you are making... and nothing like the threat of a visit from the Gustoppo to keep the populous in line.

Only thing in our favor ( as a free people ) is that we are allowed to posses guns to "defend ourselves". The Gov't is always semi-worried about a civilian uprising if they get too far out of control on taxes, regulations, etc.. Why else do you think we are not allowed to own automatic weapons and the like. That would be considered superior firepower.  My biggest fear in the attempt to get all handguns, then long rifles is that once that happens, taxes and regulations will get out of control. What ability would we have to stop it then? Vote someone out of office?

Gun ownership is the 2nd ammendment. It is a "right" granted by the constitution just like freedom of speech.
Last time I checked the federal laws - Lawful ownership of an automatic weapon was legal too. You just have to pass the background investigation and pay the tax stamp. No big deal.

[/ QUOTE ] Yes, but the 2nd does not have to say that you have to "register" yourself to own one, which is basically what you are doing when you pay the tax and get checked. Also, they are passing more and more laws to limit ownership. "Gun Hoarding", ammunition quota's, etc. The argument is where they are attempting to tie the 2nd to hunting, when the intent was civillians being armed to defend against tyrany(sp). Look at the national guard, once state controlled, are increasingly being federalized and utilized as a national force.
