It's interesting to know that Mr. Gasket had the first commercially available "straight-line" shifter and it won a prize at SEMA in the early Seventies when it debuted. The Hurst version was released about six months later.

Amen to that.

I disagree on this one. Hurst made better shifters by far over Mr Gasket but the Mr. Gasket Vertical Gate was noted in the day to be THE shifter to have. For every Hurst ram Rod sold, Mr Gasket sold 500 Vertical Gates-don't know the exact # but just making a point here.

I think it was Super Stock mag who did a comparison and it was hands down Mr. Gasket and also spoke with some credible speed shop owners from the day over the years and the return customer comments for the Vertical Gate style shifters was Mr Gasket.

Again this is personal preference.

It has the distinct ergonomic advantage of always having the trigger the same distance from the T-handle, no matter which gear you're in.

I always figured the round reverse stick was the early one because it was welded and the flat stick was riveted, which seems like it would be cheaper to produce. Mark, I have an article on the Ram Rod and from what I understand it was made years before but as you stated, it wasn't readily available until later on.

Below is a picture of my Ram Rod and boot.
