Like I said, think I made every newbe mistake there was! Bid to 43k. Which is what it was for sale here for (low number) but the reserve at mecum was higher becuase of the fees. No sale. Bummer, guess I have to keep a 44k mile original L78 Turns out Friday 1030am is one of the worst slots there is. Mostly dealers looking to snag a good deal. TV's not rolling yet and they are selling neon and trailers. No one's liquored up yet! There were also some good deals to buy. If the L78 would have sold I think I would have bid on a 1969 Firebird Vert, 400/4speed car. White ext on Blue Int and Blue Top. Clean, clean original car that had a hard time getting to 25k and the owner dropped the reserve. Also and another mistake, they post a daily "green sheet" with car lots and basic description. because I did not know where they populated that info from I made the mistake of listing on a form as the form requested, make and model of car. Thus, it was only listed as "1970 Camaro SS" with no mention of L78. Most of the mistakes were mine, but some were not. Two that I really got frustrated about were: First, apparently Mecum was ordered to hire some local union for many of the drivers and workers (at least that's what I was told). Many of these guys could not drive a stick very well and some were driving these cars like they were at a wrestling match. The (much) older guy who was suppoed to drive my car across the block kept trying to start in 2nd gear instead of 1st and would not listen to me. He kept killing it, so they "pushed" it across the block. I am sure this did not help. . The car acutally runs great so it was disappointing to have the car pushed across the block. Second, I made sure that I had the mandated 1/4 tank of gas. Check in said that was not good enough and that they had to drain the tank and put three gallons back in. 3 gallons aint a whole lot in a BB car especially when you sit in line to get into the convention center and then drive it to the slot. When it was time to leave yesterday I flagged down a mecum golf cart with a battery and gas can and asked for a few gallons of gas to make sure I could get back to the trailer lot a good ways from the convention center. Apparently, if you car will start they cannot give you any fuel. I left the convention center, got into the tunnel 1/2 between the center and the trailer lot and of course, ran out of gas in a pitch black tunnel. Car guys to the rescue, some unknown good samaratin (Thanks Bill if you read this!) drove over to me in a scooter with a few gallons of gas from the trailer lot. I think he passed me broken down as I was walking to the trailer lot. When I got back with the trailer (we were going to try and push the car into the trailer!) he put the gas in and we were able to drive it in. Again, GREAT car guys at this show. The mecum staff were very nice if not helpful. I gueess their hands were tied with many of the rules. The workers and drivers? not so much. We wound up leaving last night and driving back to New Orleans. If I ever were to do another Auction, I sure learned a few things. It is definatly a machine! RichPern

Auctions are very stressful. We brought a 427 Comet to Barrett Jackson two years ago and it puked on the ramp from loading up.
It started and tons of smoke came out of the rear. It just looked horrible on a car that was going for no reserve. I think that cost my friends about $10,000 on the price of the car. |

Chuck I have removed your statement because of the mix up between you talking about X11-X22, this car being X66 and it being second hand info. If your friend wants to post and straighten things out or if anyone has info that is clearer than what was presented then it can be posted.
