The wheels on the 70 black car are originl and the spare is mint. I will try to get it out and take a photo. Sully, you can come and see it in person...

Here are some more photos. It's a March of 1970 AO rim. It was hard to get decent lighting without changing the look of the paint.

Rick, Do you have the shots of my spare I sent you a few weeks ago? I can't put my finger on them. ![]() [/ QUOTE ] Sorry Dennis, I printed the picture but did not save it to a file (at least I cannot find it). However, it looked very similar to the photos above. Slight Charcoal color and no overspray through the spokes with a battleship grey back. Rick

My personal opinion is that it's not that the factory purposely had different shades as much as there were either inconsistencies in mixing(guy mixing didn't get it quite right, or didn't care) or they changed paint vendors as GM did from time to time. I also think the black tended to bleach out in time. Mine were more charcoal than black.

As with most other things on these cars, we should have learned to avoid two words: 'ALWAYS' and 'NEVER'. When you include the 'Human Factor' in any process, you WILL have inconsistencies. Still, we've all failed to answer Sully's original question;..... WHICH PAINT IS CORRECT/BEST? ![]() ![]() ![]()

Looks pretty black to me. I agree there was definitely variations of the sheen and tint of the black used, but any original wheels I have ever seen were either true black, or so dark of a gray that they looked black until you stuck your nose up close enough to bump it off the center cap.
