Modified in this case means that it was cut and hacked to accomodate all the stuff that made it competitive even after 20 years of racing. I believe that when they were delivered to the racers from the factory, they did not have any speedometer cables. My car was a four speed and the aluminum cased, A-833 four speed trans had a steel plug in the speedo gear hole, so there was nothing to hook the cable up to.

My car from last year.
 About 21,450 now. I drive it weekly from April til the end of Oct. It had 14K when I got it 11 years ago. Now I'm getting depressed about the storage thing.
