Here is the original spare out of our 1966 Corvette Convertible. Its from the original owner, and until we inspected the car, he did not even know the there was a spare tire in the hub. Its got the original air, crayon markings and sticker. I guess this is throwing a curve ball to the tend?

Very interesting Dan.
I have seen adhesive residue on Spare tire treads, where it looks like the outline of a label removed, sized similar to the one I posted earlier,or this one you show us. It does look like yours made it past the assembler. |

I have the original spare from my 72 SS Camaro (Polyglas), a friends 71 Firebird (Polyglas) and a 73 Z28 (Wide Oval) I parted out...there is no evidence of a sticker on any of them.

It is obviously beginning to look like maybe this changed from decals to stencils sometime in the mid to late 60's. Interesting and very informative photos however.

Just saw this and thought I would throw in the mix.. another "almost survivor" 66 SS and the spare tire tire has stencil, no sticker.. but it's also obvious the rim was used, so can't much stock in this I guess. Mike |
