George Lyons, The PPG paint formula to correctly refinish 70-74 Z-28 and 70/71 Chevelle SS wheels is DDL32961. This is LAQUER and the formulation contains a SUEDE additive which accounts for the Roughness(G.M. was trying to emulate a CAST LOOK) and DX685 Flatting agent which retards ALL the gloss. As well NO clear coat was used on these wheels.
George, Can you elaborate on the details, paint and process YOU used to replicate the Original Z-28 finish????

Bob G, If you want to further the ORIGINALITY of your wheels, look for ORIGINAL Lugnuts as I show below.....NOT the same part # replacements with SHORTER Crown.....

Chuck, Chevelle SS wheels are 71-72 in this style, 70' were different style, not this paint process or color, agree ?
As to what I used, the PPG suede paint is not rough enough in my experience, but close. Also, the orig finish was hard and quite durable, seldom ever chipped badly or rusted. A lacquer topcoat would not hold up long term or have any durability. I discovered a suede/coarse like additive you can use in urethane clear with flattener, baked in booth and durable like oem. VEEEEERRRRYYYY difficult to hit in the right combo of clear/reducer/hardener/flattener/suede additive that gives the exact finish we want. Lots of mixing and spray out panels to test, lots of material cost. I did them myself and spent about five hours just mixing and in the booth on a Sunday night (the only time my guys can't throw me out). All I can tell you is ...........I got em lookin like they did in 1970.

George,

Chuck is right. The trick is that you need to apply the paint "dry" Kinda like GM did quickly on a moving assembly line. The roughness of the finish was more a product of the quality control process present at GM in the day- or lack there of... . When these wheels got painted they were not looking for a show quility finish.

I have the formula on my web site http://ca.geocities.com/[email protected]. To get the roughness, you spray the last few coats from a distance and by the time the paint hits the rim, the paint is 1/2 dry which causes the roughness. I know it's not the way the factory did it but it's hard to tell the diff. Also don't forget to mix mix mix the paint so the metallic makes the paint lighter.

Mark,

You used to have some cool detailed pictures of a 70 COPO on your web site. Are you going to ever get photos of another one posted??
