Had to shake out the cobb-webs----1958 Pontiac Chieftain, tri-power, blue/white ext. No, I didn't buy it new, bought it from my cousin 1965.It was a love/hate affair---loved the car, especially parking with your H.S. girlfriend,----but hated to wax it[ back then my cousin drilled it into my head that you had to use Blue Coral Wax [ which was a several step process that was probably invented by Arnold Schwarzenager. Actually when I dug for the 70 Chicago Auto Show pictures I came across slides of me learning to drive on my Z at I believe age 14. What the heck is a 14 year old doing driving that kind of car in a cemetery? Great place to learn I guess? At the time the Z was painted exactly like Denis's first ride. Will post the CAR pic tomorrow.

MY FIRST CAR WAS A 1970 SS(?)ELCAMINO. HAD A 350, M21, 12 BOLT(4:10 POSI). WAS NEVER SURE IF IT WAS A REAL SS OR NOT. OTHER THAN THE 350, IT SEEMED TO HAVE ALL THE RIGHT PARTS. WISH I STILL HAD IT...

I bought a '59 Rambler wagon ($50) with a Caddy Town'n'Country radio (and those cool Rambler fully reclining seats ) The Rambler didn't have any brakes backing up; I bumped into a couple of things (telephone pole, passing car) along the way. I traded the Rambler for a '63 Mercury Comet with a 260 V8, blew the rear seal on a road trip and ran the engine dry. Light came on, filled it up with oil, drove it home, fixed the seal and ran fine after that. Had an aftermarket AC unit that slowed that car to a crawl..
Sold the Comet, moved from Iowa to Atlanta, and bought my first "real" car, a '66 Chevelle, 283 and 'glide, L-60's in the back along with those twist-in coil spring spacers. Had a friend with a '67 Barracuda, 273 and a 3-spd auto, He would beat me in Low, but I would pass him everytime I shifted into High. My brother sold me the Chevelle for $600, and he made me get my driver's license first. Up until then I had not seen the need for a license! My boss in Atlanta let me use his car for my driving test, he had a late sixties Jaguar E-type; I drove it for about three miles before taking the test. Had a real "on-off" throttle in that car, and I had a lot of fun on the test! Wow, that was 32 years ago... -Sam [img]/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ ![]()
