If blasting isn't an option I went this route with an old distributor for another project and it turned out ok. Other pieces of the distributor I used other forums of cleaning as well as chemicals but for this discussion I'm referring to just the distributor housing.

Powerclean or degreaser with hot water. Then use Black Magic Aluminum Wheel Cleaner and a green Scotchbrite pad.

Also did the same on an intake.

On my L89 heads and intake I used a Martin Senour Metal etch and a stainless steel toothbrush type brush and they turn out fantastic, I use this same product to clean alternator cases and distributors, just another way to make it happen if you don't have the tools for the other techniques listed here,

I have used Aluminum Naval Jelly made by Loctite i believe. This stuff cleans real well. If your trans case is apart, distributor, etc soak parts in very hot water first. Take a paint brush, brush jelly cleaner all around and scrub with brush, let sit on parts for 10-15 rinse off with hot water. I have cleaned factory Chevy Aluminum intakes with this stuff, comes out good.
