My gut is telling me if you made two lists of racers running automatic transmissions of the type which could have been configured with a column shifter, the ratio would be way off.


Those who have won with a colum shifter vs those who have won with an aftermarket ratchet shifter.

There is value in removing chance and using a consistent system. Probably why automatic transmission tend to be faster than the equivalent manual these days.

I have a column shift , B&M manual reverse pattern, turbo 400 in my 67 Chevelle and run high 11's.

My favorite was the B&M chrome box with the shifter sticking out. Not 100% what the name of it was, but it just looked cool. I ran the Star Shifter because the car I built to race was a 307 Powerglide that was a trade-in at the dealership. I always liked the idea of the reverse pattern and a column shift auto. I weighed the pros and cons, and to make the Powerglide detent work and have a NHRA accepted Reverse lock-out, the B&M just made sense.
