I'm involved in Pontiac window sticker reproductions. As you know, Pontiacs don't have an issue with documentation. PHS, who can supply a copy of the original invoice, is the true document that proves how your car was equipped and where it was shipped. I've researched hundreds of original 1964-1979 Pontiac window stickers, and can offer some opinion on this subject.
Dealers swapped cars, which leads to some confusion with original documentation. I've received many orders for window stickers, some requests are from original owners, where the dealer name on the PHS invoice is different than their original documentation (original sales receipts, bill of sale, etc). How did this happen? Bob Adams is an expert on this topic as he sold Pontiacs for many years. In discussions with him, he gave me some insight as to various dealer techniques. In some cases, a new dealership would open, and inventory would be pulled from surrounding dealerships to fill the new dealerships lot. In other cases, dealers would work out a swap for a specific car that a customer wants. A salesman would do whatever it took to close a deal, hopefully before the customer walked out the door, or at least the next day or two, while the customer was still "hot" to buy a car. The salesman would check the Zone Inventory lot, and if nothing was available, try to locate the specific car (model, engine, color, etc) at a surrounding dealership. If found, a swap or purchase would be made from that dealer, and the car would be transported to the selling dealer for the customer. The selling dealer would usually not want the window sticker to reflect the other dealership, so a request would be sent to the zone office to have a new window sticker issued with the selling dealers name and address. In some cases (and I have examples of this), they forgot to change the dealer code on the window sticker, so you Dealer "ABC" for the name and address, but with Dealer "CAB"'s dealer code. Mike

That's exactly what happened to my '70 Trans am. It was invoiced to a dealer in Tennessee as reflected on the PHS invoice but sold new in Ft. Meyers Fl.

so in regards to the protecto-plates, did the dealers make them?? or were they requested from zone office?? I seem to remeber seeing a thread about cars being reissued protecto-plates when resold if still under warranty?? |
