Interesting stuff.

I'm confused by the title, though: why are they called "pool" sheets?

Salvage pool is not a salvage yard. It is sometimes called the insurance pool (or at least it was back in 1971).
It is where most of the insurance companies have the cars towed. They stay in that yard temporarily and are bid on by salvage yards, and sometimes rebuilders. Supposed to be closed bidding back then, but there was always some funny business. Right after high school I worked for a guy who would buy two mustangs at a time, one hit in front, and one hit in back. He would remove the windshield, cut the a piller and across the floor pan, weld them together. Always told the buyers the car had been hit, but they seldom figured out where. The weld job across the bottom wasn't that great, but undercoating was pretty common at the time and would hide a lot.
One day while at the pool, I spotted a silver 69 Z with black stripes. Still had the POP in the glove box. I knew the car. It had been stolen from the Seltzer Chevrolet used car lot (Seltzer sold ZL1 #61 I believe) and the engine tranny and front seats removed. Then they rolled it into the lake. I bought it for $246.52. Rebuilt it in my spare time, put in a punched out 283 and that was my first Z. Had $780 in it when completed.
