Default F.A.S.T. Racing.

Hey all...

I am not sure how many of you guys follow this racing format, it is VERY cool. For those that aren't familiar, the cars must have a 100% stock apperance, even down to the bias ply tires that were originally installed on the car. However, any internal engine and diveline mods are allowed, as long as they do not compromise the stock appearance of the car.

The Fall National Event took place over this weekend at VMP in Virginia.

The new FAST ET record was set by Terry Penningtons L88 Corvette. He clocked an unbelievable 10.30 pass on the bias plies with exhaust manifolds, full 2.5" exhaust and factory L88 heads. He had stiff competition from Dave Dudek in the black Hemi RR. Dave was the previous ET record holder and still holds the MPH record. The RR ran a best of 10.40, so it wasn't easy. A somewhat scary moment occured when Ed Cook. who runs a 6 pack Roadrunner and is knocking on the door of the 10's (has run 11.0's), lost control on the big end and hit the wall at over 120 MPH. Fortunately Ed wasn't hurt, and the car sustained relatively minor damage. The car Ed runs is a "real" A12 liftoff hood RR in the very rare black color. It is one of only a few made and is a very unique piece of Musclecar history. We'll get it back together. Bad news is that Ed was done for the day, even though he did get the win light during that unforgettabe pass.

Congrats to Terry and all the other competitors.

Mike

-----Have never been to one of these races but would love to. Im curious as to what MPH these 10sec cars are doing??? I have heard that the guys with these cars soften up the bottom end on these motors so they can manage to hook up at all. If thats the case they must really hit at some point to get anywhere near those kind of #s. Anybody have a vid of one of these cars launching??? Would love to see that.......Bill S

Here is a link showing some racing from the Martin Michigan annual event. Hope you all enjoy. If you haven't seen it in person, you don't know what you are missing.

I just saw on the fast board that Terry ran a 10.30 @ 133 mph, with a 1.5 60 foot time. Thats smoking on F70x15 repop Firestone bias plys.

I watched over the video. Man those cars are rolling. Its just cool to see the vintage iron actually being used and enjoyed. The guy with the silver chevelle about 1/2 way through the 2nd round video was killing the gears. AWESOME!

Was cold, damp, & windy, but after Friday's rain out it was nice to *finally* get on the track...but, out of my 8-10 runs, probably 1/2 of them were wasted passes because of wheelspin...a little sunshine would've been nice to put some heat in the track, but oh well, you gotta work with what ya got. Anyway, made 3 passes in the 11.7s, with a best of 11.75 @ 118+...was wanting more, but I had to be gingerly @ the line or else it got ugly in a hurry...thought the car had 11.6s (or better) in it since I went 11.73 here at our local track, but never could make it happen. I drew the #1 qualifier in eliminations...I dropped an .046 light on him (on a pro-tree no less!), and he thanked me by running his personal best 11.34...Camaros were never meant to outrun Corvettes, and he promptly reminded me of that!

Enough rambling, here's the quick-8 qualifying order for the Factory Stock class:

#1 - Larry Weymouth, L88 Corvette, 11.34 @ 120
#2 - Julie Pennington, L88 Corvette, 11.40 @ 120
#3 - Scott Tiemann, RA2 Firebird, 11.62 @ 116
#4 - Pete Simpson, ZL1 Camaro, 11.63 @ 116
#5 - Rob Clary, Yenko Camaro, 11.75 @ 118
#6 - Wayne Nelson, 428 Mustang, 12.39 @ 110
#7 - Bruno Beltraine, RAIV GTO, 12.36 @ 115 (later went 12.20)
#8 - Jim Mino, RA2 Firebird, 12.49 @ ???

Gotta congratulate "Big Dog" for his record setting 10.30 pass...scary thing is, the car *wiggled* a tad off the line, so there's more ET in it!
