Thanks Glenn. I'm a little surprised that '61 '09 lasted as long as it did. Chevy had a lot of problems with those new castings; so much so that they discontinued production of them before the end of the model year. They only sold 142 of them!
Mark, that's what caught my eye too. I was wondering if it could have been the same car after Ammon R Smith got rid of it, but the 'Ol Reliable had a long white scoop on the hood by the time they stopped racing it. Glenn, one other question: One of the photos in the staging lanes shows a '63 Impala SS, white. Was that also West Hampton in '70? Funny thing.....a friend of mine owned a car just like that, black vinyl top and all when he lived on the Island. ![]() Great shots....Thanks ![]() ![]() |

Verne That '61 sticks in my mind because I had a '65 Impala SS 409 that I had the misfortune to run up against him with. I don't remember the car having a pedigree like that, but it was a long time ago. The way tech was at Hampton that car could have had newer and higher horsepower '09 in it and still been running as a 360. The shot of the '63 behind the Willys was taken at Hampton also, but in June of '69. I believe that Willys is an early shot of John Olcotts restored "Russo & Santo's" record holder. - - ![]() - - Thanks, Glenn
