My understanding was pace cars were fitted with both Firestone and Goodyear for all pre race activities. Whichever tire was on the car that won the pole position,then the lead pace car would be shod in that tire company's tire. The exception occurred in 1972 when Goodyear has an exclusive with Indy to showcase is new Polysteel tire and as such all pace cars came equipped with G60-14 Polysteel Tires.

That may have happened some years, but most of the time, a specific tire was tied to the pace car. Like you mentioned, 72 H/O. 78 Vette was specific and in 71 Mopar was always Goodyear.

Cool pics. We know that Mopar was using Goodyear exclusively during that time. Different rules for that race!

Goodyear Balloon tires for Model A's

Goodyear Super Cushions for 40's and 50's.

Goodyear Speedway Wide Treads, Speedway 350's, Power Cushions, Blue Streaks, and Polyglas for the 60's and 70's.

Goodyear Steelgard, Polysteel, Flexton Radial GT's, and Eagle GT's for the radial set.

Even the Gatorback..... already here for the Fox Body Mustangs, and coming soon for the Corvette!
