Does anyone know if all LA built 1970 Z28s had smog and emission controls or if the car had to be sold in California to have smog equipment? Thanks.

It did not matter where it was originally built at.
Begining in 1970,if the vehicle was to be sold Brand New in the State of California, and some parts of Nevada,it had to have RPO NA-9 known as E.E.C.-Evaporative Emission Control. This is the Charcoal Cannister capture & return line system w/under carb.cooling plate. Not to be confused with the A.I.R. system, which is the Smog Pump and Diverter Valve system in which All Solid lifter engines were built with, regardless of where sold new. |

[/ QUOTE ] Mr70 is absolutely right again....I have a Calf built 1970 Z28 also sold new in Calf and I'm fortunate to have the build sheet for this car. PRO code NA9 is there just as Mr 70 states. Although the smog equipment is gone from my car, the canister on the drivers side is still present, and I don't recall seeing this on other 70 Z's without Calf emissions.

David James brought his California based/built/sold 70 Z to Camaros at Carlisle 2005. One of the best, highest point 2nd Gen LEGENDS Camaros weve judged.

[/ QUOTE ] TDWZ28.... it is my understanding that the heat shield under the carb did not come installed from the factory. therefore date coded shields are not an issue. You can get a brand new NOS GM heat shield from Classic Industries complete with original GM part# for 36 bucks. Page 541 of their catalog. Hope this help you.

The heat shields only came on California smogged cars.
The rest of the country didn't get the carb heat shields.
