This car was bought new in 1968 and after seeing some road use that summer it was converted to a full time drag car in 1969. The conversion took longer than expected and the car did not see any real track use until 1970 in the E/Stock class. Based in the Owen Sound area, the car competed in Southern Ontario, Western New York and Michigan up until 1973.
After converting the car to D/Gas in 1973 the original 302 motor blew during that season. Finances at that time prevented the rebuilding of the engine and the car was parked in storage. Unfortunately the removed original engine was not returned to the car and its current location is not known. The car remained in storage until about 2010 when it was returned to the track with a freshly rebuilt 350 overbored to 355 CID. It was campaigned on and off from 2010 to about 2023, through many years saw no track days. Events were mainly through the Ontario Nostalgia Drag Racers Inc. plus a Rich Christensen arm drop event. The car is a combination of both good preserved original and period modified condition with some aging in spots. The paint is a mostly a combination of older period resprayed areas and more recent paintwork from around 2010. The blue metallic finish was mixed to replicate the factory Lemans Blue shade, but is slightly lighter than the original. The car’s original paint remains in a few spots, mainly the front lower valance assembly. The body is in generally excellent overall preserved original rust free condition. There is a failing dent repair on the right rear quarter panel (due to a tractor hitting the rear of the wheel well opening while in the shop in 1969). The inner wheel wells and adjacent trunk floor were purposely hammered for tire clearance one day at the track so those areas are not pretty. The original hood was cut in period for the fiberglass hood scoop. Unfortunately the odometer was disconnected in the early 1970's after its conversion to a drag car at 3,002 miles as a novelty. As the car has only seen limited track use since that time the actual mileage will not be too much higher than that. As mentioned it has not been licensed or on the road since 1968. Perhaps one of the lowest mileage 1968 Z28's in existence? The current engine build features 10.5:1 compression flat top pistons, a 500 lift camshaft, a Pete Jackson gear drive, a high volume oil pump, an electric water pump, an aftermarket oil pan and the original 302 engine cylinder heads. It is equipped with an open element chrome Edelbrock air cleaner and a 750 cfm Holley double pumper four-barrel carburetor mounted to the car’s original aluminum Winters brand intake manifold (casting #3917610). Polished aluminum World Products Sportsman brand valve covers are also installed. A MSD 6AL electronic ignition system has been installed employing an MSD distributor. Other notes on the car; Original front disc brakes were removed in favour of drum brakes for racing. Original disc brake components are retained and included with the car. It was not factory equipped with the D80 spoiler but one was added in period and then removed more recently. It is also included with the car. 3 of the 5 original ‘DF’ Rally wheels are included with the car. Original interior panels and seats are in excellent condition. Original Protect-O-Plate, build sheet, Canadian Heritage Certificate and purchase agreement included with car. Original numbers matching M21 is still installed but its internals are modified. A Long shifter is also fitted. The undercarriage was stripped of undercoating when new and painted blue. This finish is aged and peeling in spots now. Custom frame connectors installed. 12-bolt rear axle is not the car's original. Original steering wheel is no longer with the car. Dual trunk mount battery set up but only one battery currently installed. Master disconnect switch mounted in gas cap opening. "Pizza Power House" graphics were originally painted but are now decals. This car was used for promotion of Owen Sound, Ontario's first Pizzeria.
