Charley,

Does the car have a "CHART-ADAPTER ASM" ??

It attaches to the end of the speedo cable at the trans and makes a 90 deg turn. The speedo cable screws on one end and
and the other end screws to the trans.

Thanks

Rick,
I have seen that list in Colvin's book and questioned it. It doesn't make sense to waste paint on a motor that might fail at test. Not to mention, it would make small leaks hard to detect.

The Flint V-8 assembly sequence in CBTN is incorrect; Flint engines were painted AFTER hot-test. I spent a lot of time at Flint V-8 when I worked next door at the Chevrolet Pilot Line - a friend of mine ran the Piston Department.

Does John know if they used what looks like #2 Permatex during assembly ? It looks like it on head bolts and screw in studs ?

[/ QUOTE ]

Yes - they used thread sealant on head bolts and on the screw-in stud threads; both protruded into the water jackets.

I may be insane but... Is that a remnant of a wax blob...indicating where the weight went?

[/ QUOTE ]

Actually, grease paint, but yes, that is the mark that was determined to place the wheel weight.

I work in the paint shop at the Ford KC plant as a supplier. A few years back, we had some warranty issues with yellow spot on units. Started to do some backtracking and the grease paint (using yellow titanium dioxide) was being applied too heavy and was flinging off the wheels as it was going thought its 'road test'. The paint, although cured, was still fresh and getting stained.

[/ QUOTE ]

Actually, that's the remains of a wax blob, not grease paint; GM didn't use grease paint. The Micro-Poise wheel/tire balancing equipment used color-coded wax dots dropped on the tire adjacent to the rim flange in the balancing station to indicate to the downstream weight-apply operators what size weight to use and where to apply it. I worked with the GM/Micro-Poise balancing systems for many years in Chevrolet assembly plants when I was a Production Superintendent.

Charley, what is the finish on the hood hinges? Is there any copper paint on them? What about the springs?

Thanks,
-Sam

[/ QUOTE ]

There would be no paint on the hood hinges or springs; they were phosphated, and were attached to the fender long after paint, right after the front clip was bolted to the body.

John,

Thank you for correcting me on the wax info. My friend who was an engineer at Lansing Assembly informed me of the Micro-Poise material after I had put down my information. Thanks again for correcting me!!
