If the car were YS 8042 and it fell in line with the other YS numbered cars of YS 8043 which is Vin# 482858 then YS 8042 "could" have been too late a production to be Grotto blue. That color was dropped in Early (calender year) 68 in favor of Lemans Blue. Lemans blue and Corvette Bronze were introduced at the same time and YS# 8037 was Corvette Bronze. (Just something to think about)

We can speculate all we want or Omar could just chime in and give out the vin or fill us in instead of staying mad in the background.

I would think in 1968 cars were converted just like 1981. Cars were pulled from stock and converted without real regard to build date. If a customer wanted a certain color it would be pulled and converted from the pool af available cars. There are 67 Camaros converted in early 68. Cars would not be converted as they arrived...BKH

Is there really that much logic behind the YS #s? For example, look a this list:
YS8023 412891 YS8024 377575 YS8025 240776 That is quite a span of VINS for three cars with consecutive YS #s. Are there any explanations for how the cars were numbered. Was it like suggested in an earlier post, the cars were converted based on customer demand for color, etc.? If this was the case, it must have been a 67/68 only practice? In 69 the cars were no longer "converted", right? They came as COPOs at that point. And I guess that is why were there cars "left over" that sold after the 69 model year? I know, I am a little slow but catching on? ![]()

Racefan, As was noted earlier, these cars were ordered in batches but not converted until sold. The '67 & '68 Yenko cars had a much larger variety of dealer installed items available, so it made sense to wait until the car was spoken for before converting it. The '69's are COPO's, and obviously have the 427 factory installed, however, those that are sold out of Yenko are usually different in some way. When we find a unique Yenko car, odds are that it was sold new at Yenko - they didn't seem to worry about the warranty issue as much.
So, there shouldn't be any consistent logic to the YS# compared to the VIN, Body or Build #'s.

[/ QUOTE ] This wasn't exclusive to '69...the majority of the '68 Yenko Camaros started as COPO cars (suspension, speedo, carb), but not all of those cars got converted to 427 power. Brian Henderson (BKH) was probably the first to put that puzzle together... ![]() |
