I believe GM rated the Vette motor (LT-1) higher than the Z because their premiere car was NOT going to have the same or less hp than the second stringers. Camaros, Deuces etc. The L79 motors in the 65,66,67 chevelles and the 66-67 chevy 11's were the same as the vette. Same components anyways I believe. What was different the oil pan in the chevy 11's? Speak to me I learn more stuff everyday!

Or did they rate the Z28 motor lower so the Vette would still be the top performer?

I thought that chevy wanted the vette to remain top hp dog for marketing reasons.

Jeff and Carl, I think I said that! The Vette ruled the roost for GM. That is why Chevy quickly took the 6 banger out of the 55 vette cause the double 5 chevy had a bigger, more hp motor.

I always thought it was keeping the vette top dog and the 10 HP dif was open element air cleaner vs the dual snorkel...

I think there was also a more restrictive exhaust on the z also
