I say no. It really comes down to you personal choice. It is easy to change and easy to change back.

FWIW - back in the day, I had a White/Black 66 SS and I painted the panel black plus took off the emblems. I wasn't the first to do this but I loved the clean black look! Matched the interior, too. Sort of went with the 67 look.

Another vote for no with the slate color. I like it either way. Mine definitely did not have it black originally so I restored it that way. It would have clashed with my black license plate anyway.

Paint it black... and while you're at it, throw on some redlines and mag wheel hubcaps to really nail the overall look...Nice 66, love that color!
