I thought the dog dish got body color wheels and the full wheel cover got black wheels. That's how my Nova is.

[/ QUOTE ]

That was the general rule, but exceptions have been noted... One in particular that comes to mind is Joey Swezey's gold 69 Dana Nova. Might have just been a supply issue, ie: no wheels in the correct body color as the car was coming down the line, so they ended up with black ones instead. Just a guess.

So true. The old 'always and never' rule.

According to JohnZ all 5 wheels were painted at the same time as the front sheetmetal, at Chevrolet assembly.

I agree with that, except that the rims were painted in enamel, where the body was in lacquer. At any rate, my research on earlier cars shows that the "dog dish" cap was not optional; it was the standard hub cap. If a combination of white wall tires AND a full wheel cover was ordered, then the wheels were painted black, otherwise they were body color. Now since a SuperSport automatically came with full wheel covers, if white wall tires were ordered, the rims would have been black, but IF the car was built with the standard black wall tires, I'd suspect it would be delivered with body colored wheels.
It's very difficult to tell exactly how a car was sold new if it was a "stock" car rather than an "ordered" car. Dealers routinely made changes to their inventoried cars to make them more attractive to buyers. A very typical change would be to add full wheel covers to a car, thus making it look much better on the lot. (not like a cheapie) None of those dealer changes would appear on ANY paperwork.

That may be true on Impalas, but 68 SS Camaros (car in question) did not get full wheel covers as standard equipment as part of the SS package, they got steelies with dog dishes. I still say cars that came with black wheels likely came that way because of a supply problem with having the proper color of wheels at the time of assembly... The fact that the wheel paint was totally different type of paint than the body paint makes me feel even more confident that this could have, and likely DID happen on occassion...

I wonder if the wheel color had any connection to the trim level of the Camaros? Maybe cars with a Black-out lower panel, etc? Just curious. School me.

Yes that car, and yes, it's probably one of the most properly/accurately restored 69 Novas I can think of... when it's not sporting it's Day 2 look it wears black steelies and dog dishers, which it was delivered with when new... and looks just as bad-assed as it does with the Cragars IMO.

And it has the RIGHT hood for a Nova!

The camaro is a non SS 327 3spd. No lower blk out. It had a white vinyl top. I bought it from the ex wife of the original owner. The dog dishes were on all fours when I drug it out of the shed. I thought they were bomb canned black until we poped the tires off, and there's no sign of green on any of them. There is a nbr 26 in wax pencil on one of them.

Thanks for the clarification Joe. I wouldn't have known that. I wonder why an SS full wheel cover wasn't part of the package?

Yep, that's true for Impalas. In fact, there wasn't even a delete option if you didn't want the SS caps. The only way to get an Impala SS with dog dishes was to order the chrome wheel option ('63&'64) or the 15" wheel option.

Swezey's Dana car looks plain deadly w/ the steelies in black and matching black hat...and w/ the stinger & black stripe, even more sinister!.

Just to add some more info to this thread: I used to own an all original 1967 Camaro RS I bought from the original owner. It had body color painted wheels and full wheel covers. I think they were referred to as the "tulip" style.
