My best experience has been using a thin coating of a blue permatex type of sealer on spotless, clean threads. This applies to old and new head bolts.

Also chase the threads in the block with a tap, to clean out any excess gunk which may have fallen from the disassembly process. Followed by a good blast from an air nozzle, for anything left in the bolt hole.

Follow the tightening sequence, and torque steps, and you are good to go!

------Permatex No.2 (black looking) is what I have always used. It never hardens or sets like the Permatex blue stuff. I agree on the thread chasing, on both the bolts and the block. After chasing the bolts run em over a wire wheel to get any barbs off!!!........Bill S
