The 2nd Gen enthusiasts at www.nastyz28.com have never seen evidence of any other body/frame VIN stamping.

[/ QUOTE ]

That's not true. I recall seeing posts about the subframe VIN on NastyZ28.com. I then looked at my subframe to see if I could find one and I did. Unless I was dreaming it. I'll take a look when I get home.

Chuck you are 100% correct. That was the picture and thread I was thinking of. My apologies.. Here is mine somewhat faint at the beginning of the stamp.

3 - March
10 - Day
70 - Year
N - Are we certain that's Norwood? My car is LA...
2 - Shift

If the "N" stands for Norwood, what does "S" stand for? I have a 1970 Firebird subframe with a S instead of N on it.

Was not the 70 Firebird, built either at Norwood,OH or VanNuys(LA), CA ???????

Maybe you can ask at the Performance Years Pontiac web site (???)

Camaro frames should only have the (N)orwood or (L) Los Angeles designation...........

I guess my point is that Camaros and Firebirds WERE built on the same line so I don't think the "N" stands for Norwood. I think I will run over to my other garage and look at my 72 and 74 Camaros and see what they have on them if anything. They are both Norwood cars.

I don't think the N is Norwood. Lets review the rear axle tube. Last two digits are G with either 1 or 2. G meaning gear and axle plant... 1 and 2 meaning shift.. N on the sub must have some other meaning that we have yet to uncover.. Is there an LA car out there with L on the code?

Hotrodpaul where are you??

I can't imagine any reason for an assembly plant to date-stamp any component; my Production Engineering Group supplied the G.T. Schmidt VIN derivative-stamping tooling (for the body and for the block pad and the transmission) to all Chevrolet assembly plants, but we never supplied any tooling for date-stamping. I'd guess those date stamps were applied at the subframe manufacturing source for traceability. I don't recall who made the "F"-body subframes, but most Chevrolet frames were made by Dana, A.O. Smith, Parish, and Chevrolet-Bristol Road Stamping in Flint.
