Try this to avoid checked baggage charges, take your bags with you to the gate, like it's going with you as carry-on luggage. When they tell you that you have too many bags to carry on, ask for then to "gate check" them. They don't have the ability to charge fees at the gate.

But they do when you go to claim,as I had to do this at Phoenix Sky Harbour,Southwest Florida International,O'Hare & Midway airports recently due to my misjudgement.
Each time my extra bags were held back from the others after landing and I was approached by an attendant asking me to follow them to a customer checkout counter. I had to pay them then & there or no bags for me. They are a savy bunch.

I absolutely HATE flying and have an extreme fear of it..
 I think it is a control issue.. I would much rather drive somewhere even though it is usually safer flying, so they say..I'll do it if I have to, but won't like it.....  Rich
