------There was one of these fairly near me (5/6 miles) that is still used as a storage facility for rolling stock above ground. When I first went there the huge steel doors were still in eveidence with motor-homes parked on top of them. The units below ground were partially filled with water that I believe had leaked in. I heard later that they filled those gigantic holes to the brim.......Bill S

There's an abondonded one of these over here in Addison Il.
I think ours was a Nike Missle base in the 1950's.
It was a big draw for kids and cars with dates,in the mid 1970's..It was located between an industrial area and a now defuct drive-in theater(Sky Hi),and because of that soon got the moniker,Make out Base.
As kids we used to watch all these whacked musclecars w/sidepipes pull into it,and then start rocking back & forth.
We rode around it on our huffy bikes & Raleigh choppers and would stare down the missle silos and see nothing but rats & snakes in them.Rows of deserted barracks too.
Cops would drive up to shew us away, but after a while grew tired of it,as every few feet there was a quonset hut or chained fence we could scatter into or under, and make them come in and get us.Those were some fun times..

Actually I was searching under Vintage Service Station,Gas Station etc and near the end of the search pages there it was!I was trying to find some parts and accessories to go with my small collection and parts for restoring a Vintage Bennett Gas Pump.I think it would be cool to just visit tour something like that looks really neat, just Imagine the History.I bet a REMODEL JOB would cost a small fortune for something like that! and to imagine one of those 50 ton doors landed on your foot!
