Hi Everybody:
I was supposed to see car this weekend but the gentleman who owns it had to go out of town. He did call me with the following info: Vin off plate: 09D016117250452 SST 6013880 BODY CODE: BF03011 PAINT: VV TD765B90 I'm supposed to look at this car next weekend, any thoughts on this vin and other numbers? I'm going outside my comfort zone, I know nothing about these cars(I'm a Corvette guy) but I like them. Any and all info is greatly appreaciated. Suggested referance books? Thank you.

Hi Folks:
Finally hooked up and went to see this car, couldn't get any photos as car was stuffed in a garage surrounded by other "treasures" (junk). Guy bought the car and drove it the summer of 1999 and then disassembled it. Right now the car is a rolling frame with body attached, front sheet metal, doors, motor and tranny out. All hardware in a tool box. Ex-Wife (whose garage car is stored at) has out fenders, rad, doors, bumpers and everything else into the bed. Frame and doors look great, rear quarters have some rust bubble around rear lips, but they look good enough to have a good metal man to repairs these than to put in new quarters. Sides of car appear straight and frame is great. Grill has 396 emblem and looks real striaght. All stainless appears to be there. I pulled these numbers today: number on motor pad: T04071V 72155250 motor cast into rear 3902406 also cast on back is gm2 and "pass" heads both read gm5t and say "Pass". also one read 8909802 and the other had c307 in it. Turbo 400 had plate that read 68C 244 that I believe is the correct Turbo 400 for a 1968 396, built 244th day of the year. Serial number cc-68-2699. Rear End was a 10 bolt (10 bolts on rear cover) To the left of the cover was a arrow pointed to about 2 o'clock and "cfd 2" next to that. To the right of the cover was 99 978508. Wheels were Rallys. 3 had h-2 K-1-3 which I believe are 1973 Kelsey hayes and the fourth had a h and K-1-2 that I believe is a 1972 Kelsey Hayes. Plate on top of Firewall had ST 68 -138839 09D 0161172504452 TR 765 B70 (I think can't read my own writing) VV paint code. Motor rebuilt but has been sitting a long time. This looked to be a really nice car before this guy took it apart. I can buy the car for cheap as I said and I am interested in your thoughts. The disassembly and the sitting for 9 years scares me but this car looks like a easy resto. Any thoughts are appreaciated.

The cowl tag should have: ST 68-13880, that would be for an SS Elcamino. The numbers you posted after ST don't make sense.
The engine code is wrong to be the original for it. The cowl tag showed a build of 09D (4th week of September), yet the motor is stamped T0407IV. That means it was assembled April 7th for an Impala. You'll have to find the casting date on the side of the block to see what year. As you know, it should have a 12-bolt rear. What does the VIN plate say? |

Guys, thanks for the help, the cowl tag is st 68-138830. Now you have me wondering if I put that last 3 in the number. Being an insurance guy I take pictures of 1000's of vin plates a year and have the equiptment to do it, Should have brought a camera, live and learn.
Other numbers on the cowl tag are TR 765 B7"0" (or D?) 09D 016117250452 VV paint I was there for an hour, it was cold and cramped, should have brought a camara, had a flashlight I don't know were the vin tag is, probabley somewhere under the dash? I was already doing YOGA to get around the crap in the garage. I do not know these cars at all, I had no idea that it should have a 12 bolt rear end, I'm assuming that a 12 bolt has 12 bolts on the rear cover? Any idea what the rear end that is in it is? Good to know the motor isn't original. Guy selling thought it was the right motor. Guys, thanks for your help, can anyone recommend a good resource book for numbers or a website so I can get some more knowledge. I have the Corvette books (that's how I got the tranny and wheel numbers) but it was of zero help with everything else. All suggestions appreciated. Thank you very very much.
