Very manly sound. Nice demo. Love the plate. Gutsiest move Pontiac made in 1970.

Anyone have any idea how many VOE options were sold? I always
liked this option, but wondered how effective it really was. I also wonder why Chevy never put this option on the Vette, the COPO's, etc.. ![]() Nuch

Do a search for "VOE 340 Cuda" and see them mocked up and being actuated by vacuum lines - it makes it apparent how the system works. There's also several postings of the original "Humbler" VOE television ad that ran during the Super Bowl.

What's the deal? nuch SS396: As for whether they were "effective" or not... Define effective. Power increase? - probably insignificant. Way-cool rumble on demand - you betcha'! ![]()

After watching that, it really makes me think that Pontiacs are probably the coolest musclecars ever. That is an incredibly cool option that apparently only Pontiac had the balls to offer, if even only for a short while.

Hi guys, 230 plus cars with this option is the number I see too.
It was an awesome option in my opinion. What is really cool is that in the closed mode, they flow about like a stock GTO muffler does. In the open mode, they flow about as much air as the typical chambered-style muffler of the same size and configuration (around 50% of the air of an open pipe). This is not something to brag about but it shows that even back then, they were doing better with this muffler than a stock one. However, the rest of the exhaust was not much to write home about (2" front pipes) so to be honest, it was more a macho sort-of-cool-guy thing to have. I am building a set for my 69 340 CUDA and they will flow more that typical VOEs as I did a few tricks inside them. They will not however compete with any good straight through mufflers on the market but they will be darn quiet when closed and ten dBA louder when opened. No more marketing for me but a company in Michigan may be ready to offer them one of these days. We are building a sample with their parts to see how they work. They will not be correctly sized for the OEM VOE cars but for other cars, they will look dead nuts, on the money with an added spring and actuator hanging off their ends plates. Tom |
