I think Rick Cell is right, there were only two designs used.Looking at a few local equipped Chevelles,as well as parts books, here is what I believe they did.
Regardless of engine, the 3 & 4-speed 1968-72 Bucket seat console AND NO Console equipped Chevelle/Elco/MonteC used Muncie shifter #3973867 which is stamped on the shifter foot itself, but Chevrolet parts books see this as shifter #3973866...(GM has history of doing this with parts in the past.Like the 1970 Malibu Tail Lenses,Flywheels and Ignition Coils. The actual manufacturered part itself will show a one digit difference,be it up or down, from what GM parts books & boxes actually callout for.)...The 1970-72 3 & 4-speed equipped,(1968-69 were different),Chevelle/Elco/MonteC Bench seat applications used Muncie #3973864,which is stamped on the shifter foot, yet the parts books call out for #3973865.This is also compared and noted in the AIM. Why some shifters say MUNCIE along with a part #,and others are void of one or both,is a good question.Could they be over the counter issued,Saginaw only or later service parts? |

I believe Muncie one say Muncie while Saginaw ones do not have the stamping.

![]() ![]() You guys keep forgetting the Big chevys had muncies also and they probally get more confused with chevelle shifters than any others. Here is chevelle/impala console and bench pretty easy to see why they get mixed up.I have seen more impala handles less part numbers than with one. Also just because a handle does not say muncie on it does not garantee it was not originally installed on one.We have seen over the counter replacements plain and quite a few on caprices for some reason plain but all had muncies. |

The one on the far right looks like what was in my bench seat '68 Chevelle, and the same as the one I mentioned here earlier.
