Speaking for myself:
1. Start car in garage.
2. Drive to favorite stretch of no-traffic straight road.
3. Plant right foot firmly on the right pedal, watch tach climb to the red line.
4. Turn car around, repeat step 3.
5. Notice that the gas gauge is now 1/4 of a tank less than before Step 1.
Step 6. Return to garage with big grin on face.
Step 7. Call stock broker about more Sunoco shares.

I am very frustrated with the whole fuel consumption/fuel mileage issue.
A report the other day said that the average fuel economy of new vehicles is the same now as it was 20 yrs ago!!!! WTF are the manufacturers doing?!? I can't believe they are building trucks and SUVs that weigh 6000 lbs and get nearly single digit gas mileage and worse yet people are buying them!!
My 400hp 2001 Camaro SS with 3.73 gears (and a 6-speed manual which is double overdrive) still gets almost 30 mpg on the highway.

Speaking for myself:

1. Start car in garage. (damn it was like 30 degrees saturday)

2. Sit in driveway until vehicle will idle at 1000rpm

3. Drive three blocks to 1/2 mile no-traffic straight road.

4. Try to convince reluctant passenger seatbelt adjustment is unimportant.

5. Plant right foot firmly on the right pedal, sidestep the clutch, watch tach idiot light come on and jam second gear.

6. Make split second decision to try third gear or go for the brake.

7. Hand passenger a towel and an offer to get out.

8. Turn car around, repeat step 5

9. Notice that the gas gauge is now 1/4 of a tank less than before Step 1.

10. Return to garage with big grin on face.

11.Clean passenger seat.

Chris, are there still people willing to ride with you?
I have a hard time finding willing passengers.

Musclecars are a very low percentage of vehicles on the road so gas mileage isn't a big deal. The huge SUV's and extended cab pickups we see everywhere are the real gas consumption issue. Heck, the newer Mustangs and 4th gen Camaros get 25-30 mpg on the highway which is pretty darn good for 300+ hp. But these trucks are killing us. Not only that, people continue to just hop in their vehicle and run to the store instead of planning it out and stopping on the way home from work or while running other errands. If I'm really good, I can go 2-1/2 to 3 weeks before filling up. I only put 12K miles on my 88 4Runner from 10/04 through 11/06. So yes, we all need to drive less and make an effort to conserve fuel. But we'll still be allowed to drive out musclecars!

SOM, Steve, Jeff - Our problem is we make good 'bad guy' poster boys! You never know what one of our tyrants will do if he/she thinks they can get some 'mileage' out of something the media has made a evil target.

Cars are a tiny part of the problem. Real scientist, not political activist, have already found that heard animals emit more 'so-called' green house gases than all other any other source. And the BS about cars not being more efficient, that is frighteningly absurd. Hell, even the late model Z06's are considered low emission vehicles.

But the real stunner is these people act like fuel guzzling jets, ship, military, and even other countries don't exist!!! Tyrants never stop trying to take our rights away....one by one...little by little...one day you WILL ride public transportation provided by the people that know what's best for you!!

Meanwhile the world will float in unused crude!

rant off...obviously this is a sore spot with me.

hmmmmmmm. Ohio? maybe I can meet you half way and we'll give each other a ride? This last guy (victim) had no idea what to expect. A neighbor,in the army reserve, he's just back from Iraq. I think he's only ridden in foreign four cylinders his whole life.
Needless to say, he'll never be the same.
