I have a set of NOS hoses on one that I'm building now. The lower is correct, the upper is for 68 I believe.
But youre right. After looking at the "correct" repops, I chose to go with the NOS upper even though the p/n is wrong. I can get some pics tomorrow if no one here has any by then. dave

Thanks
I am going to make a stencil, silk screen, or stamp so I can replicate the original lettering and logo but most of all I want the yellow stripe on the hose that shows the correct position. The repop stuff is so bad that it made me laugh? If you are going to go through the trouble of reproducing something... do it right! I really wish there was a Chevrolet reproduction parts supplier that gave their view/opinion of the quality of the parts... much like Ames does for Pontiac. They give you the low down and then you can make the decision on whether to buy it or not, if it is not right they tell you, if it is all that is available they tell you that as well... Sure would be ![]()

I took a look at the hoses from my car which I think are original, I've owned the car 27 years. My picture came out pretty bad but I can work on it if you want to see them.
The top hose does not have any writing left on it but under where the hose clamps were, you can see a BLUE stripe, that runs the whole length of the hose. The stripe is 1/8" wide and looks like it was put on with a perf. wheel. As the hose is mounted to the radiator the stripe would have been at about the 1 Oclock position and runs straight down the hose. It has 1/4" letters of A U C cut into the rubber 5 times during the whole length. The lower hose has GMAU with 3942561SM under it printed in White, 2 1/8" from the radiator end printed straight up so you could read it. This also looks like it has the same BLUE line, but it is harder to see. The cut letters from end to end are A U A A B A U A AB After re-reading this I think I better work on getting better pictures or just send you the hoses. Questions? Mike |

Thanks for the replies everyone. The little bit of research I have done so far has turned up different fonts, font sizes, and stripe colors...

The lower hose in my pic is also a 561 SM hose like Mike's. No stripe, though. Neither has ever been on a car before, so maybe the factory hoses differed slightly.
What I believe to be date codes on them: Upper: 6L19A Lower: 4L30C

Were the original thermostat housing gaskets blue like the ones that Autozone gives you today or were they brown?

There isn't going to be a "right" hose. Fonts, locations of lettering and stripes, stripe colors - all vary with the different mfr's and dates or batches that were made. Pick a known original hose or factory photo and duplicate it. Glad to see the interest in these details!

You inspired me to do it right Dave... LOL
As far as the no "One" correct hose... I have begun to figure that out... WOW I have collected more pics of hoses than I thought humanly possible. I am really just tired of paying for reproduction pieces that are no where close to correct. It is insane that the resto guys charge stratospheric prices for crap that my 2 year old niece could tell is different than the original... Wish someone would start a resto parts company like Ames... where they would tell you whether the part was exact... so so... needed alot of work... or not very good but the only thing available. At least then you can make an educated decision. ![]()
