[ QUOTE ]
Wilma and I were kicking this around today, by general consensus, what is the correct shade, and degree of gloss, of the black/gray center sections of 70 5 spoke SS wheels.? Who makes the best paint to restore these.? Thanks SULLY

[/ QUOTE ]

I know someone that has an original "as factory painted"
SS wheel that was the spare in the trunk and I believe
it never saw the light of day. Maybe I can get some images
if you are interested.

The wheels are going on my 70 L78 Nova, I have a coat of the Details/Ground up spray bomb stuff on them now,I think it is way too glossy though. I would like to see what an untouched orig wheel looks like. What paint is everybody using.? Thanks SULLY

PPG DP90LF mixed as a sealer, shows up about 60% gloss black. I'm one of the few I guess that feel that the deuce wheels should be black - but I know of some NOS wheels found at Yenko Chevrolet are Charcoal, so

Pretty crusty, but here's an original Yenko Deuce Magnum 500. Initially i thought they were gray, but under the layers of corrosion and filth, they seemed to originally have been flat black.

As Erik said, these wheels were purchased directly from Motorwheel and may have possibly been finished differently than the production pieces used on Chevelle, Camaro and Nova.

ATTN; RICK NELSON.

Rick, Do you have the shots of my spare I sent you a few weeks ago? I can't put my finger on them.

Jim, I sent a few pix of the wheels on my car but I also have shots of the spare which has never been on the ground. Should be a fair representation of a '70 wheel since it's never seen daylight. Unfortunately, even a good digital shot isn't as good as having the real thing in front of you.
Here's the best I have at hand.

Good pic there Joe/Eric The color of the wheel inserts has been the topic of much debate over the years within the Yenko Deuce community, with no real conclusions yet - except that both black and charcoal have been found.

The set of NOS Magnums pulled from Yenko's shop are still in the Motorwheel boxes with yenko labels on them, and they are reportedly charcoal. Several cars have been found with black, others with charcoal, so it's still a tossup.

I painted mine black bec/ that is what I found on them, and they were original condition. I think the Wargo car has black, but I think Tommy K found charcoal on his original condition a/t deuce. So, it appears that both colors are applicable.

Here are a few more pics of an original Yenko installed Deuce wheel for reference.

The windows of the wheels on this particular car appear to be flat black. I think 35+ years of crud and sun fading may give it a slightly charcoal appearance. These were late April dated wheels.

Now here is a pic of a "factory installed" Magnum 500 that was on a very low mile unrestored 69 L-78 Chevelle. It definitely appears to be more charcoal in color.

Here's a shot of the light grey backside on the original '69 Firestone Wide Oval spare.

The wheels on the 70 black car are originl and the spare is mint. I will try to get it out and take a photo. Sully, you can come and see it in person...

Here are some more photos. It's a March of 1970 AO rim. It was hard to get decent lighting without changing the look of the paint.

Sorry Dennis,
I printed the picture but did not save it to a file (at least I cannot find it). However, it looked very similar to the photos above. Slight Charcoal color and no overspray through the spokes with a battleship grey back.
