Try carfax.com I'm not 100% sure if they do the older cars or not.I owned a 89 GTA vert at one time and I went ahead and put my information in on the car to car fax.The information that you get back from car fax with have,how many owners have owned the car and I believe that it will give were the car was owned at also(what state and city ect.).Plus it'll say if the cars been in any accidents.

Carfax only works on cars with a 17 digit VIN. 1981(?) or later.

Although I can not speak for other states,the Illinois Secretary of State has purged any records older than 10 years.
