Was the filter itself a thin foam?

Jughead,
It was a dark gray foam. The domed screens were not chromed, as in the earlier post. It looked exactly as the one in your first post, although I can not see the tabs on the band in that photo.

The foam elements would tend to ignite, with a carb backfire if you didn't change them or clean them now and again --The elements were/are pretty cheap, but I would just take it out run it under a hose and squeeze out the excess--I never had one lite up--Here's some photos of those air cleaners----Stelling and Hellings--

Wasn't it the flyeye that was notorious for immatating a candle wick in the case of a backfire?

I guess it depended what air cleaner they had on the shelf that day, although the Stelling and Helling was the earliest---Verne, I would never post your photo,I did however send copies to Team Chevelle etc.-- ---

Yeah, by the time I stopped using it, I had my share of carb back fires, and the foam had a big hole in the middle of it.

Thanks a lot Joe Now I guess I'll have to go read the wise cracks about my shoes. (You didn't really do that did you.........????)

Was there some that had square holes in the grid instead of round ones that were made later? I seem to remember seeing them way back then?

My '70 came with a triangle shaped air cleaner instead of the round one and it has the square holes. It also has the foam that will catch on fire if you have a backfire.
