I did some research on this a few years ago... Pretty sure that I gave Marlin what I had found too so that he could verify my findings on cars that he researched.
The letter has to do with interior color only... The style of interior (be it bench or bucket, standard or deluxe) has no bearing on the code. As noted, "A" was black, "B" was blue, "R" was red, etc... I don't recall ever seeing an "M" code though. The number following the letter denoted the exterior trim level. I don't have my records available currently so I'm going from memory on this, but I believe that no number following the code meant no exterior trim level, a "1" meant the car had roof drip rail moldings, a "2" indicated body side molding OR lower body molding, and "3" was roof drip rail moldings AND body side moldings OR roof drip rail moldings AND lower body moldings. The anodized window trim MAY have been part of "2" (sorry, I just don't recall at the moment), but always seems to be included when "3" appears on the trim tag. Regards, Stan |

Stan is right on the money. I had documented the letter codes on the deuces and some other models, and then we compared notes one year at super chevy. I have verified many cars with those two codes, and the only to not fit the theory is a blue BB car at super chevy (remember that one Stan?). Otherwise, it's interior color and moulding combination, it won't relate to BB vs. SB, or SS or non-SS.
Never saw an 'M' though!

not sure if it applies to the Nova line but I read that some cars got a code on the trim tag for interior paint color codes. These cars had metal panels in the interior that had to be painted to match the interior color.
